FOOT WARTS

Foot Warts

Treatment for Foot Warts
in the Niagara Falls, NY Area

Foot warts are hard growths that typically appear on the balls or heels of your feet. They can be painful which leads to discomfort. Foot warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV causes an infection of the outer layer of skin on your feet. The infection can come from contact with a surface or skin-to-skin contact from things like a hug or handshake. There are several treatment options which include OTC medications and surgery.  Contact our foot doctor today to schedule your appointment or to learn more about the other services we provide, including treatment for heel spurs, diabetic foot care, ingrown toenails, and more! We proudly welcome patients from Niagara Falls, NY and the surrounding communities.

Treatment Options for Foot Warts:

Freezing Medicines

There are both in-office cryotherapy treatments and over-the-counter freezing treatments. A foot doctor can apply liquid nitrogen to the wart, either as a spray or on a cotton swab. The freezing causes a blister to form around your wart. The dead skin will then fall off within about a week. You may need to repeat cryotherapy treatments every two to three weeks. There are also treatments like Dr. Scholl’s Freeze Away.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid works by removing one layer of the wart at a time. It is likely that your healthcare provider will suggest that you apply the treatment regularly at home, followed by occasional visits to the clinic. This can take weeks to completely remove the wart.

Surgery

The foot doctor will cut off the wart with an electric needle. It can be painful so the doctor will likely numb the area first. It is not used often to treat foot warts because it can lead to scarring. The scarring can remain painful for years, so that is why it is not used often.

Laser Treatment

Laser treatments burn the wart. The infected tissue eventually dies and falls off. This treatment will likely need to be repeated every two to four weeks.

Vaccine

The HPV vaccine has been an effective treatment for foot warts even though it is not specifically meant to treat warts.
